Fine Art Fair Artist Selection

Each year, over 600 artists from around the world submit their proposal of images and summary of work to be juried into the Peoria Fine Art Fair - one of the top fine art fairs in the country. To select the final body of artists to be showcased, a panel of professionals with varying backgrounds in art education, history, collecting and aesthetics is gathered to score each artist’s work.

Jurors for the 2017 Fine Art Fair were:


Scott Cavanah

Photography and digital imaging - Peoria, IL

 

Scott first developed his love for photography during high school, shooting images of his friends on skateboards and mountain bikes.  He graduated from Iowa State University and then worked as assistant photographer in Des Moines, IA.  He returned to school to earn his Master of Fine Arts in 2004 from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, with a concentration in photography.  Since 2008, Scott has been teaching classes at Bradley University in the Department of Interactive Media.  His areas of expertise cover a wide array of subjects ranging from animation to digital imaging to storytelling.  His current research centers around using augmented reality to visualize large data sets.  Scott exhibits his work nationally and has won awards from the Texas Photographic Society and The Photography Hall of Fame.  Scott is a member of The Society of Photographic Educators and the College Arts Association.  As a working professional photographer, he is the owner and principal of Studio Cavanah, Inc.  The studio does editorial and advertising work for regional and national clients.  He also lectures regionally on photography and digital imaging, and serves as consultant for several corporations and nor for profit organizations.

 


Dennis French

Retired Illinois State University art professor - Bloomington-Normal, IL

 

Dennis French is a retired university art professor, artist, designer/craftsman.  He has a BFA from Arizona State University and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He was program director of the jewelry-metalsmithing discipline at Illinois State University for 27 years and retired in 2008.  His work is found in many private and public collections and since retirement he has focused mainly in the design and crafting of functional work with a materials emphasis in wood.  Dennis also has a historical website that focuses on European design and architecture at the beginning of the 20th century.  Specifically it focuses on Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasglow School, the Wiener Werkstatte and its great designers, and the artist community at Mathildenhohe in Darmstadt, Germany.

 


Penny Atkinson-Potter

Jewelry - Howell, MN

 

Penny was Chief Designer for Matthew C Hoffmann Jeweler in Ann Arbor, MI.  Her position not only involved the actual designing of the rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc, but also required her to train and manage a 5-person design staff.  She started with Matthew in 1984, and developed and broadened her metal working, setting, and polishing skills.  By the fall of 1989, Penny decided to venture out by starting her own company, Penoir Contemporary Jewely.  Penny now produces original jewelry pieces utilizing diamonds, precious and semi-precious gemstones and precious metals.  Each piece Penny creates is an original.

After each juror reviews all of the artists and their work, the artists with the top scores in each medium are then invited to participate. Last year’s Fine Art Fair artists traveled from 26 states and Canada with 52 first time exhibitors. 

Fine Art Fair Awards Selection

On the Saturday of each Peoria Fine Art Fair, two special judges review all of the artists’ works in person. They score everyone and determine a select group of artists to be granted $10,000 in cash awards. Merits distributed are:

1 Best of Show - $3,000

3 Awards of Excellence - $1,000

1 Artist Choice Award - $1,000

All award winners receive an invitation to return to the upcoming Peoria Fine Art Fair. This year's Fine Art Fair will be the Peoria Art Guild's 55th annual fair!
